CSU Long Beach Wins Best Practice Award
A "Best Practice Award for Lighting Design and Retrofit" was awarded to California State University, Long Beach at the 2011 California Higher Education Sustainability Conference. A number of the campus retrofits garnering accolades were installed under the California Energy Commission’s SPEED program based on recommendations made by SPEED's key partner, the California Lighting Technology Center at UC Davis. CSU Long Beach implemented technology retrofits in 24 buildings over the course of two years including bi-level LED parking garage lighting, high-bay T5s, bi-level stairwell lighting, and CFL canopy exterior downlights, leading to an estimated campus savings of 600,000 kilowatt-hours and $72,000 per year. "The results will not only reduce our energy cost, but will reduce CSULB’s greenhouse gas emissions from electricity use," said Paul Wingco, energy and sustainability manager for the university’s Department of Physical Planning and Facilities Management.
