Saving Energy, Money and our Environment
The facts make a clear case that energy efficiency is a key element to achieving California’s energy and sustainability goals. The potential of SPEED-demonstrated technologies represents a large part of the solution to save energy and money while reducing our carbon footprint. The following table presents a glimpse of this savings potential through a partial set of SPEED technologies with both low and high market penetration.

Significant progress has already been made. As a result of SPEED efforts, a number of PIER-supported, state-of-the-art technologies and best practices are at the forefront of utility, third-party, and state-run deployment programs targeting a cumulative savings in California of:

• over 100 million kilowatt-hours per year of electricity,
• over seven million therms per year of natural gas,
• a cost reduction of $20 Million per year, and
• a greenhouse gas emission reduction target of nearly 100 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

Over $8 Million of this annual savings has already been achieved, primarily through implementation of monitoring-based commissioning, and efficient parking lot and garage lighting on university campuses across California through the UC/CSU/IOU Energy Efficiency Partnership.
